Why you should arrive at LEAST 3 hours before flight departure
If you’re a planner like me, it’s imperative that you organize your thoughts and prepare for unforeseen mayhem—even when it comes to catching a flight! It’s long been recommended that you arrive at the airport at least two hours before your flight departs. Nevertheless, let’s talk about arriving at least three hours early for international departures.
LET’S TALK ABOUT IT!
In general, domestic and international flights can be delayed without warning… but it’s the international flights for me! I don’t know about you, but I literally can’t afford to miss a flight out of the country. If you’re like me, arriving at least three hours before your flight departs will save you both time and money. Here’s why:
SAVING TIME
Security checkpoints (standard, TSA, etc.) can be time-consuming due to immigration checks, random screenings, or simply the number of passengers boarding a larger-than-average plane. It’s best to breeze through checkpoints without stress.
[Window] Shopping – Most international airports have plenty of shops and eateries to explore. You might want to grab a T-shirt from the city you’re departing or one for where you’re headed.
Unwind and relax – You’ve made it to your gate on time. Now you can find your Zen: meditate, read a chapter of your book, listen to music—whatever helps you settle in. Enjoying extra time before boarding is highly recommended.
Boarding – Most flights begin boarding about 45 minutes before departure, so being at the gate early makes for a smoother, less stressful experience.
SAVING MONEY
Missed flight – Let’s say you missed your international flight due to poor timing (self-inflicted). Without travel insurance, you’re likely paying out of pocket for a new flight—possibly later that day, the next day, or with a different airline. Avoid this by getting to the airport early.
Mileage (gas, not flight) – If you miss your flight, you might have to call an Uber or Lyft, or ask whoever dropped you off to come back and get you. Ride-shares aren’t free—and let’s hope your pickup person doesn’t ask for gas money! The goal here is to catch flights, not feelings.
Unexpected accommodation – Missed your flight and the next one isn’t until tomorrow? If you're at an international airport away from home, you might have to book a hotel or Airbnb. If you're lucky, maybe a friend nearby will offer a couch—but unexpected overnight stays are rarely convenient or cheap.
No matter what your travel plans look like, you want a stress-free experience. Arriving early for your flight won’t cost you much—but it can reward you with peace of mind and a smooth start to your journey.
To be delayed—but prepared—doesn’t mean denied. Just don’t miss your flight, and you’ll be just fine.
